The 106 was introduced to the market in September 1991, as the entry level car beneath the 205, although it is considered to be the exact replacement for the 205. It was a substantial development of the Citroen AX platform, with the intention of making it both heavier and safer. It was aimed at the Renault Clio which was in production a year earlier, and a modern alternative to the slightly larger Peugoet 205 which had been a huge success and was still popular a decade after its initial launch. Like the Citroen AX and the Peugoet 205 the car had all independant suspension with Macpherson struts at the front, and compact transverse torsion bars at the rear. It won praise for its attractive styling, comfortable riding, great handling and cheap running costs, the Peugoet 106 became popular very quickly.
